Dress Shopping Maid Easy

Finding the perfect dress for every body type isn’t impossible when you mix your style with some good old-fashioned compromise

Bride and bridesmaids

You laugh and cry with them, you share secrets and smiles with them. But now you have to shop for them?

It’s dress-up for grown ups only these dolls don’t have Barbie’s body. When it comes to outfitting your favorite gaggle of girls for your wedding day, the game gets tricky. Here’s how to keep the style and keep the peace when dressing your bridesmaids.

Flattering fashions

Best friends come in all shapes and sizes so when it comes to unifying your ladies, finding the common denominator is key. If you crave uniformity, choosing an A-Line dress will score points with your maids as this style wins for most universally flattering.

For Erin Casey, co-owner of Bella Bridesmaid, Chicago, selecting a dress with adequate structure is a must. The most common complaint from maids comes in the form of the strapless dress. For full figured ladies this type of dress means constant top tugging. The solution? “If you’re set on strapless,” Casey says, “designers like Vineyard, Pricilla of Boston and Melissa Sweet offer removable straps. Go strapless for the ceremony and pictures, and then your maids can don the straps for dancing.”

Customize your crew

Want to really make your maids merry? You pick the color, they pick the dress. A popular trend, Casey sees more brides choosing the fabric and length of the dress and letting their friends customize the style for a new twist on taste and sophistication. Casey sees the most versatility with designers like Simple Silhouettes and Coren Moore.

Letting your ladies choose from halter, cap sleeve or strapless give the body conscious an instant boost. Keep cohesion by requesting similar lengths – mixing floor length and with tea length might make for a great look on the gal but not for group shots.

Mainstream maids

Keep an open mind when searching for the perfect look for your ladies. Move away from bridal and browse fashion magazines and catalogs. Ready to wear cocktail dresses suit an evening reception instantly. Retail shops like J. Crew, Ann Taylor, Banana Republic and Gap offer stylish options that double as your wedding gear. If you find something you like in the mainstream market, act fast and get your girls shopping as merchandise moves quickly. You won’t be able to special order last seasons sheath once it’s off shelves.

Of-the-moment maids

Color bursts onto the bridal scene this season in the form of rich purples, nautical navy, smoky charcoal and cherry reds, according to Ellen Heisler, associate fashion editor for Brides magazine.

“Moving beyond the sash, today’s best accessory for the bridesmaid is a brooch or pendant to adorn the dress,” Casey says. These accessories also make great gifts for bridesmaids.

Mixing your style with a win-win strategy when selecting your bridesmaids’ dresses not only will make your gals glow, but also will make the dress wearable again. And that is no easy feat for any fête.
